PDF to Excel (.xlsx) converter

Pull the rows and columns of a PDF into a real Excel workbook you can open, edit, and re-pivot. Each page becomes its own sheet.

Heads up: best for PDFs with clear row/column data — invoices, schedules, simple tables. The conversion is line-by-line: each text line is a row, and columns are split on tab characters or runs of multiple spaces. Complex merged-cell tables, multi-column layouts, and styled headers won't be reconstructed perfectly.

FAQ

Common questions

How are columns detected?
Columns are split on tab characters if the line contains at least one tab, otherwise on runs of two or more spaces. A line that has no tab or multi-space boundary becomes a single cell in column A. This works well on PDFs that were generated from spreadsheets, or where the original document used consistent column alignment.
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
Only if the PDF already has a text layer. A scanned page that's just an image, with no OCR text embedded, has no text to extract. Run it through an OCR tool first to create a text layer, then convert.
What if my PDF has merged cells or nested tables?
Cell merging and nesting aren't reconstructed. The output will be a flat row/column grid with the text in the cells; you can re-merge or restructure in Excel after the fact. This is the trade-off for a tool that doesn't require a full visual layout engine.
Does this work on password-protected PDFs?
No. Remove the password first, then convert.
Is my PDF stored on your server?
Your file is uploaded to build the .xlsx, and the file is cleaned up from server storage after processing.
What's the file size limit?
10MB per file.

PDF to Excel Converter

Our PDF to Excel converter extracts the rows and columns of a PDF and writes them into a real Microsoft Excel .xlsx workbook. Each page of the PDF becomes its own sheet; each text line becomes a row; columns are split on tab characters or runs of multiple spaces. Open the result in Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice Calc.

Heads up: this is a row-and-column conversion

A "real" PDF to Excel tool that reconstructs merged cells, nested tables, and styled headers is a hugely expensive engineering problem. This tool takes the honest, pragmatic path: it reads the PDF's existing text layer, treats each text line as a row, and splits on whitespace to find column boundaries.

That means:

  • Each page becomes its own sheet in the output workbook. Sheet 1 is the first page, Sheet 2 is the second, and so on.
  • Each non-empty text line becomes a row. Blank lines are skipped.
  • Columns are split on tab characters or runs of two-or-more spaces. A line with no boundary becomes a single cell in column A.
  • Cell merging, nesting, formulas, and formatting are not reconstructed. You'll get a flat row/column grid with the text in the cells; you can re-merge or restructure in Excel after the fact.
  • An "About" sheet is appended at the end with source filename, page/sheet/row counts, and a note about the conversion's nature.

If your PDF is mostly row/column data with consistent alignment, you'll get a workbook you can edit immediately. If it's a complex visual layout, treat the .xlsx as a starting point and clean it up in Excel.

How to Use the PDF to Excel Tool

1. Upload Your PDF

  • Drag a .pdf file onto the drop zone, or click to browse.
  • Files up to 10MB are supported.
  • The PDF must contain a real text layer (not be a scanned image with no embedded text).

2. Convert

  • Click Convert to Excel.
  • The server reads each page, splits the text into rows and columns, and builds a .xlsx using phpoffice/phpspreadsheet.
  • After a few seconds you'll see a summary with pages, rows, and sheets count.

3. Download the .xlsx

  • Click Download .xlsx to save the Excel workbook to your device.
  • Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, or any other spreadsheet app that supports the OOXML .xlsx format.

What Gets Converted

| Source PDF feature | In the output .xlsx | |---|---| | Page | Its own sheet ("Page 1", "Page 2", ...) | | Text line (non-empty) | A row | | Tab-separated values on a line | Multiple cells in that row | | Multi-space-separated values on a line | Multiple cells in that row | | Single-line prose (no column boundary) | One cell in column A | | Blank lines in the source | Skipped | | Merged cells | Not reconstructed (becomes separate cells) | | Nested tables | Not reconstructed (becomes flat rows) | | Headers, footers, page numbers | Not preserved as headers/footers | | Images, drawings, charts | Not preserved |

Key Features

Conversion Pipeline

  • Uses smalot/pdfparser to extract text from the PDF's real text layer
  • Uses phpoffice/phpspreadsheet to write a standards-compliant .xlsx (Excel 2007+ format)
  • Line-by-line row detection with column splitting on tab characters or runs of 2+ spaces
  • Per-page sheets, so multi-page documents stay organised
  • Self-describing "About" sheet at the end with source filename and counts

Privacy and Safety

  • The PDF is uploaded to the server, processed in a temp directory, and the temp files are deleted as soon as the response is streamed back to your browser
  • Nothing about the file is logged
  • 10MB size cap and 30 requests per minute per IP rate limit

Use Cases

1. Extracting a Table from a Report

  • A PDF report has a table on page 3 that you need to work with in Excel
  • Convert the PDF, open Sheet 3, and you have the data ready to pivot, sort, or chart

2. Re-keying Invoices or Schedules

  • Stop copy-pasting line items from a PDF into Excel row by row
  • A clean conversion does the mechanical part; you only review the output

3. Migration from PDF Reporting

  • Many older systems still export to PDF only
  • Convert the exports to .xlsx and feed them into a modern spreadsheet workflow

Technical Features

  • Server-Side Processing: The PDF is parsed on the server with a battle-tested pure-PHP parser — no headless browser, no OCR for text-layer PDFs.
  • Multi-Page Support: Each page is processed in order, and each page becomes its own sheet.
  • Heuristic Columns: Lines are split on tab characters or runs of 2+ spaces; a line with no boundary becomes a single cell.
  • Self-Describing Output: Every .xlsx includes a final "About" sheet that names the source file and reports the page/sheet/row counts.
  • Streaming Response: The .xlsx is streamed directly to the browser, then the temp file is unlinked.

Why Use Our PDF to Excel Tool

1. No Software Required

  • Works in any modern browser. No Microsoft Excel, no Adobe Acrobat, no LibreOffice install.
  • No signup, no account, no watermarks on the output.

2. Honest About Its Limits

  • The result banner tells you exactly how many pages, rows, and sheets were detected.
  • The "Heads up" banner on the page tells you what is and isn't preserved — no bait-and-switch.

3. Fast and Free

  • Most documents convert in a couple of seconds.
  • 10MB file size cap and 30/minute rate limit per IP.

FAQ

Does this work on scanned PDFs?

Only if the PDF already has a text layer. A scanned page that's really just an image, with no OCR text embedded, has no text to extract — this tool reads the existing text layer, it doesn't perform OCR. If you have a scanned PDF, run it through an OCR tool first to create a text layer, then convert it here.

How are columns detected?

A line that contains a tab character is split on tabs. Otherwise the line is split on runs of two or more spaces. A line with no tab or multi-space boundary becomes a single cell in column A.

Does it preserve merged cells, formulas, and formatting?

No. This is a flat row/column grid. Merged cells become separate cells, formulas are not reconstructed, and formatting (colours, fonts, borders) is not carried over. Use the output as a starting point and reformat in Excel if needed.

What if my PDF is mostly paragraph text with no table?

The conversion still works — each line becomes a single cell in column A. You'll get a workbook with one column of text per page. That can be useful for archiving or for further text processing; if you just want the raw text without row/column structure, use the PDF to Text tool instead.

Does this work on password-protected PDFs?

No. Remove the password first, then convert.

Is my PDF stored on your server?

No. The file is uploaded to a temp directory, processed, streamed back to your browser, and the temp file is deleted. Nothing is logged.

What's the file size limit?

10MB per file. For larger PDFs, split the file first with the Split PDF tool, then convert each part.

What format is the output?

A standard Excel 2007+ .xlsx (OOXML). It opens in Microsoft Excel 2007 and later, Excel for Mac, Excel Online, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and most other modern spreadsheet apps.
