Understanding PDF to Text Conversion
What Gets Extracted?
Any text that's stored as real, selectable text inside the PDF is extracted. This covers the vast majority of PDFs created from Word, web pages, or other documents.
What Doesn't Work
A scanned PDF — one that's really just a photo or scan of a page, saved as an image — has no text layer at all, so there's nothing to extract unless the PDF has already been through OCR (optical character recognition) at some point. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs also can't be parsed until the password is removed.
Why Convert to Plain Text?
Plain text is the most portable format there is — it opens anywhere, searches cleanly, and strips away formatting that can get in the way when you just need the words. It's also far lighter than the original PDF, which matters when you're processing many files or feeding content into another system.
Remember: this tool extracts text only — if you need the PDF's exact layout, images, and formatting preserved, keep the original file; this is for when you just need the words.
